Pets can experience many of the same health problems as humans, including troubles with their hearts and lungs. Veterinary cardiology can seek to treat these problems, inclusive of heart disease, heart failure and heart murmurs.
Here at Pet Doctors in the IOW, we are very lucky to have our visiting cardiologist, Melanie Norris BVSc CertVC MRCVS from Mildmay Veterinary Hospital.
Melanie is a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons advanced practitioner in veterinary cardiology, and is able to investigate a wide range of heart conditions such as heart murmurs which can be picked up on your pets routine health checks.
Using a high quality Doppler ultrasound scanning machine, Melanie is able to perform cardiac work ups which also include taking digital X-rays, running ECG’s and blood pressure monitoring. Melanie is also happy to take referral cases from other local practices.
Symptoms of canine and feline heart problems can include:
- Becoming less tolerant of exercise.
- Increased effort or increase rate of breathing.
- Changes in colour to the mucous membranes around the mouth and tongue – seeming to have a blue or white appearance.
If you think your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms please book an appointment with your vet as soon as possible.
